Paul Mitchell studied Graphic Design at Kingston upon Hull College of Art before embarking on his design career based in London. He then worked for various design agencies before founding his own agency, specialising in packaging, corporate branding and book design. After 45 years in the design industry, he retired in 2023 and now devotes most of his time to running photography workshops, lectures and selling prints of his work.
Paul has been a member of the RPS for over twenty years, gaining his Associate in 2007 and his Fellowship in 2014. Since 2016 Paul has served on the Visual Art Distinctions Panel, becoming Chair in 2020 before stepping down in 2022. He now Chairs the Landscape Panel and has recently been invited to sit of the Photobooks Distinction Panel.
In 2019 Paul was also invited to serve on the Distinctions Committee and played an active part in organising online talks and other activities during the covid pandemic. He also played an important part in keeping the Distinctions process active by volunteering to become a print advisor, based at RPS House.
Paul’s other RPS volunteering activities include designing and organising the printing of the Visual Art Group Magazine from 2017-2023 along with the design and production of the groups promotional activities. Also in 2017 he became a Trustee of the Stephen H Tyng Foundation and took over as the Chair of the Trustees in 2022.
Aside from being a volunteer for the RPS, Paul has had articles and images published in many photographic magazines. He has also been successful in the Landscape Photographer of the Year, Outdoor Photographer of the Year and International Garden Photographer of the Year competitions. In 2022 Paul was also awarded a gold medal and best in show in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Botanical Art and Photography Exhibition, held at the Saatchi Gallery in London. Paul has also recently had two images selected to form part of the RPS Summer Exhibition in Bristol.
